Your first hike with a tent requires additional preparation. If you are going to undertake a multi-day hike or walk where you are going to spend the night in your own tent, then you are often traveling self-sufficient. In your backpack you not only have a tent, but also a sleeping mat, sleeping bag, burner, pans, clothing and food. In most cases, you will need a backpack of at least 50 litres to carry all your stuff. How far you want to go in your choice of equipment for a first trek or multi-day hike may best be based on your intentions for the coming years. If you are planning to go out with a tent and a rucksack more often, it might be a good idea to choose a few really light items for your first trip. Your mat or sleeping bag are items where you can save a lot of grams (and litres of packing volume) for a relatively small budget. Compared to saving grams on your tent, for example, it is a smart choice. When hiking with a backpack and a tent, the lighter your pack, the easier it is to walk. Go directly to the lightweight sleeping bags, lightweight mats or all lightweight tents.
