Sleeping mat types

Sleeping mats can be roughly divided into two groups: inflatable mats and self-inflating (SI) mats. Inflatable mats need to be inflated and the advantage of these models is that they can be packed into a small package. SI mats are filled with open-cell foam (“foam”). When you roll up the mat, all the air is squeezed out of the foam and when you close the valve, the mat remains nicely rolled up. When you open the valve, the foam fills again with air, which is why it has the self-inflating property. The advantage of SI mats is their ease of use, high insulation value and the high level of sleeping comfort. The downside is the larger and heavier package to carry compared to inflatable mats.  Insulating an inflatable mat often involves some engineering. Often a construction with air chambers is used or a layer of insulation is added in the production process.

The R-Value of sleeping mats

The R-Value is very important for a sleeping mat; it determines up to what temperature you will still be nice and warm. The R-values fairly closely correspond to the seasons, meaning that an R-value of 1 to 1.9 could count as 1-season, from 2 to 2.9 as 2-season and so on.
