The Exped SIM Comfort 10 LW is a self-inflating sleeping mat made for solo adventurers who need reliable insulation and comfort in cold conditions. Designed to handle temperatures down to –48 °C, it’s part of Exped’s range of mats that aim to keep you off the hard ground and shielded from the chill.
At 10 cm thick and built with a 2D sandwich construction, this mat offers a plush surface that eases pressure points and improves sleep quality on uneven terrain. The top layer combines recycled stretch tricot polyester with a honeycomb-embossed TPU film for durability, while the open-cell PU foam core traps air for insulation. Despite its lofty profile, it packs down to 67 × 20 cm, so it slips easily into most expedition packs without hogging space.
Its R-value of 7.2 reflects strong resistance to heat transfer—essentially, the higher the R-value, the better the mat keeps ground cold from reaching you. The open-cell foam structure works by trapping air in tiny pockets, slowing down heat loss and helping maintain a consistent layer of warmth under you.
